Meanwhile, we have developed radio waves â€" which are a type of light â€" in order to transmit information remotely, whilst we can now harness the energy from water waves for our society’s use.Alongside these quite useful waves, there are the seismic waves that are unleashed by earthquakes and volcanoes. The electromagnetic waves that are produced by the interaction of a magnetic field and an electric field. And the waves that are the basic fact of fun things like trampolines and a Mexican wave.Waves are all around us, in places that we may never have expected. It is therefore so important that we take the time to understand what the hell these things actually are: how they work, their main features and properties, and the main characteristics that their different types exhibit.The latter is what we are going to be doing here. We’ll focus on the two main types of wave â€" longitudinal and transverse â€" and show you the different places in which you can find each. These guys â€" such as visible light, radio waves, ultraviolet, and gamma rays â€" can happily travel through a space with no material medium. Like a vacuum, or like outer space.This makes the notion of the disturbance or displacement a bit hard to grasp. Because, how can there be a displacement if there is nothing â€" literally no material â€" to displace? Good question â€" and this has bothered scientists too.Back in the mid-nineteenth century, James Clerk Maxwell, a scientist famous for what are known as Maxwell’s equations, figured that electromagnetic waves are disturbances that are propagating in the magnetic field. So, they are disturbances just as earthquake waves are, but they happen in a completely different sort of medium to the one that we call ‘matter’.Find out all about reflection and refraction! A diagram of an electromagnetic waveLongitudinal Waves and Transverse Waves.So, now that we have cleared that up, let’s move on to the real content of this article â€" the nature of and difference between the longitudinal wave and the transverse wave.Do you have any idea of this difference? If you’ve read our article, What are Waves?, you might well be on the money. Yet, here we’re going to take it in a little more detail.The difference between longitudinal and transverse waves is all about the wave motion â€" namely the way in which the waves oscillate. If a wave produces material movement that is perpendicular to the direction of the energy transfer, we call this sort of wave transversal. If the movement is rather parallel to the direction of transferred energy, we call the wave longitudinal.For clarity, let’s take these one at a time.What are Transverse Waves?If there were such a thing as a ‘classic’ wave, it would be the transverse wave. These are the familiar sorts o f waves that we study in diagrams. We do this because the transverse waves are the easiest waves to visualise â€" as they demonstrate a polarization which we can see extending into space.Think of a skipping rope. As you flick it, a visible wave travels from your hand down the length of the rope. This is a transverse wave.The scientific definition for a transverse wave is that their displacement of the medium is at right angles to the direction of energy transmission. Thinking of the skipping rope again, that means that the visible wave travels ‘up and down’, the energy travels down the length of the rope.Get a math and physics tutor here now.Peaks and Troughs.We call the highest point of a wave â€" that moment of maximum displacement of the medium â€" in a transverse wave the ‘peak’ when it is ‘up’ and a ‘trough’ when it is ‘down’.Consequently, with a transverse wave, we can easily measure the wave’s wavelength as well as its amplitude. ‘Easily’ at least th eoretically. Because, again, you can see the distance between the peaks (through which we measure the length of the wave’s oscillation, or its wavelength) as well as the distance between the peaks and the wave’s rest position (the amplitude of the wave).Both of these â€" wavelength and amplitude â€" can tell us the amount of energy being transferred in the wave. What is a wave? (image from edraw)If you were to measure the amplitude or frequency and wavelength of a longitudinal wave, you would take the measurement from the points of highest compression.Examples of Longitudinal Waves.So, apart from the slinky (which can, incidentally, also facilitate transverse waves), what other examples of longitudinal waves are there?You won’t be surprised to hear that there are loads.Sound waves are perhaps one of the most important â€" or at least are one of the most convenient examples. They travel through air well, but actually travel faster through liquids and solids â€" as the medium is denser, meaning that there can be greater compressions of its particles. What are the parts of waves?What are Surface Waves?By the way, there is a third type of wave that you might want to know about. These are surface waves â€" like the famous ocean waves â€" which play out on the interface between two media.They are actually the combination of both longitudinal waves and transverse waves. French Grammar Rules What is the Subjunctive Mood Suzy S. Confused about conjugating verbs in the subjunctive mood? Tutor  Carol Beth L.  shares how to conjugate them and when you need to Le subjonctif is one of the most notorious subjects in French grammar  for non-native speakers of French. It is a mood  that expresses uncertainty and is often connected with feelings, emotions, wishes, or desires about a particular event. In fact, we  English-speakers also have a subjunctive mood, but we dont often use it or realize when we do use it.  Heres an example: It is imperative that you remain with the teacher at all times. In this context, remaining with the teacher is important; it is a set rule that the listener is expected and asked to follow. But it is possible that, in spite of the speakers words, the listener might disobey. The verb “remain,” in this case, would therefore be considered an example of the subjunctive. Regular Verb Conjugations in the Subjunctive As with other verb tenses, the formation of the subjunctive in French grammar follows set patterns for regular -er, -ir, and -re verbs. To form the subjunctive conjugation of a verb, take the present tense 3rd person plural ending of that verb, and add on the following  endings: je ?  -e tu ?  -es il/elle/on  ?  -e nous ?  -ions vous ?  -iez ils/elles ?  -ent Note that many of the subjunctive forms for er verbs are the same as for le present. This makes it much easier to correctly use; if youre wrong about whether it should be in the subjunctive, people can interpret it as the present tense that would often likely take its place. Here are examples demonstrating regular formations of le subjonctif: er verbs: (e.g.  aimer) que jaime que tu aimes quil/elle/on aime que nous aimions que vous aimiez quils/elles aiment ir verbs: (e.g. finir) que je finisse que tu finisses quil/elle/on finisse que nous finissions que vous finissiez quils/elles finissent re verbs: (rendre) que je rende que tu rendes quil/elle/on rende que nous rendions que vous rendiez quils/elles rendent Irregular Verb Conjugations Irregular verbs sometimes have their own, irregular roots. Here are a few examples: aller ?  aill- avoir ?  ai- être ?  soi- faire ?  fass- venir ?  vienn- pouvoir ?  puiss- For être and avoir, note that when the “i” is doubled in the nous  and vous  forms, it turns into a “y.” So for these forms, you would write “nous soyons,” “vous soyez,” “nous ayons,” and “vous ayez.” For some irregular verbs, you can still look at the 3rd person plural present tense to find the subjunctive root. For example: (infinitive  ?  3rd person plural present, root) connaître ? ils connaissent, connaiss- mettre ?  ils mettent, mett- Dont rely on this being the case 100% of the time, though. If youre not sure about a new irregular verb, you might want to look up the root to verify. When to Use the Subjunctive In French, there are  a number of signals and situations to use the subjunctive. A phrase using the subjunctive will almost always be preceded by a que. Look for phrases such as: Je veux que (I want) Jespère que (I hope that) On craint que (We fear that) (It is feared that) In context, here are a few sentences using le subjonctif: Je veux que tu viennes avec moi. (I want you to come with me.) Jespere quil ne soit pas malade. (I hope he isnt sick.) On craint que vous ne puissiez pas partir. (Were afraid you wont be able to leave.) Note, however, that some sentences may have  a que clause but not use the subjunctive. Heres an example: Il est vrai quon est a San Francisco.  (It is true that we are in San Francisco.) The subjunctive is not used in this sentence, because there is no implied uncertainty. The speaker is in San Francisco,  it is a simple fact; so the simple present is called for in the second part of the sentence. Time to Practice! Try conjugating the subjunctive in the following sentences: Elles veulent quon ________________ (aller) en France. Il faut que je ________________ (faire) mes devoirs. Jespere que tu ________________ (pouvoir) venir. Quand on est en France, il faut que nous ________________ (parler) français. Je craint quils ne ________________ (venir) pas avec nous. Il faut que vous ________________ (finir) de préparer le déjeuner. Were your answers as follows? aille fasse puisses parlions viennent finissiez If not, keep practicing. If so, good job so far. The next step is to practice correctly using and identifying where to use  le subjonctive  when you speak and write in French, so that you will be consistent using it in context. If your student is interested in science, for example, they may consider joining STEM-related groups at school, or speaking with their science teacher for insights on community clubs.
